CAPITOL FEDERAL
KU CAMPUS
LAWRENCE, KS
Completed in 2016
In numerous university settings, faculty offices are intentionally distanced from the actual learning spaces, often elevated above students. However, at the University of Kansas' recently constructed Capitol Federal Hall, a 167,000 square-foot Business School, the design deliberately brings faculty and students into close visibility. Classrooms, incubators, and financial laboratories occupy a continuous, linear volume, while faculty and administrative offices are situated in a neighboring section. Connecting these spaces is a four-story atrium with a dynamic central stair, serving as the focal point for innovation. The ground floor, split between two elevations, is seamlessly connected by a winding staircase, which not only respects the campus' topography but also symbolizes the transition from the Kansas plains to Mount Oread, housing the university's historic core. Additionally, it provides a significant gathering space for students to observe and interact.
Capitol Federal Hall's architectural design pays homage to the University's rich legacy while boldly embracing its future. The building strategically opens itself to Allen Fieldhouse, the cultural hub of the campus, with framed views of the iconic arena visible from key spaces within. By skillfully navigating the interplay of old and new, high and low, student and teacher, Capitol Federal Hall doesn't merely anticipate serendipity—it actively cultivates it.
